confirmed finds that sit next to each other in the route. This basemap has no political borders on
purpose, so it won't give away what's adjacent to what.
How to Play
You're given a START country and a DESTINATION country. Your job is to name every country that sits on the shortest possible route between them.
You can guess them in any order — for a Canada → Guatemala run, naming "Mexico" before "United States" is just as valid as the reverse. Each correct guess slots into its right position automatically, so the route always displays in order even though you found it out of order. You never need to type the destination yourself — the moment every step in between is found, the route completes on its own.
Your goal is to find the route using the fewest possible guesses — a guess that isn't on the shortest route at all counts against you just like an extra move would, so it pays to think before typing. (Retyping your own start, the destination before it's reachable, or a step you've already found doesn't cost anything — those aren't real guesses about the route.)
What counts as "on the route"
A country qualifies if it lies on at least one shortest path between the start and destination — determined the same way a map app finds directions: by the network of land borders and sea crossings below, not by straight-line distance.
Land connections
Two countries are connected whenever they share a land border — Canada–United States, United States–Mexico, and so on.
Sea connections
Countries that don't share a land border can still be connected across a short, well-known sea crossing or strait — the UK and France across the Channel, Spain and Morocco across Gibraltar, Russia and the United States across the Bering Strait. A handful of longer "gateway" links (Iceland–UK, Australia–New Zealand) are included too, since those nations would otherwise have no route to the rest of the world at all. This list is fixed and curated, not "anything nearby" — see the project README for the full rule and the complete list.
The map on the right is a real, pannable, zoomable basemap — deliberately without political borders drawn on it, so it can't hint at what's adjacent to what.
The optimal number of steps is shown before you start, but the countries themselves never are, until you find them (or Give Up to reveal the route).
Hints cost points: a hint reveals which region the earliest still-unfound step is in (e.g. "Southeast Asia") — a real clue, but not the country itself. Any country you guess that turns out to be wrong stays listed under "Ruled out" so you don't waste a second guess on it.
Restrictions
Some short-to-medium runs in Classic and Unlimited come with one or two countries banned from the route entirely — shown up front as "🚫 Off-limits for this route," never a surprise. The optimal route already routes around them, so the move count and every hint account for the detour. Restrictions are chosen from countries that actually sat on the direct route, so they always force a real reroute rather than banning somewhere irrelevant — and only on routes short enough that the detour is something you can actually reason about, not a random blocker dropped on an already-sprawling path. In Unlimited, the dropdown next to the difficulty picker lets you force restrictions on or off instead of leaving it to the usual chance.
Game modes
Classic is a daily challenge — one fixed start/destination pair, the same for everyone, that refreshes at midnight in your local timezone. Unlimited generates a fresh random pair every time you press New Game, and lets you pick a target difficulty and whether restrictions apply from the dropdowns next to the mode switcher. Custom lets you pick both countries yourself — Custom runs never have restrictions, since you're already choosing the challenge.
After finishing a run, Share Result copies (or opens your share sheet with) a spoiler-free summary — flags, move count, and a row of squares, no country names — so you can compare with friends over text.
